2004 Domaine Leroy Bourgogne

The color is the orangy, brownish, cloudy, murky color that one associates with Leroy.

Wowwww.... the nose is what remembers from this mind. The smell of the wine kept on lingering in my mind for over 2 days. Orangy, rich cheeries, peppery spices, floral and superbly feminine.

Of course, with Lalou Bize-Leroy declassifying the wine in 2004, this Bourgogne probably is the most expensive Bourgogne with taste to match.

The taste is with medium acidity, cherris, some fitz and nice and tight finish.

A simple girl can sometimes become a fine princess, and one will fall for her, not becoz she is a princess, but just because she is a simple girl.

2004 Domaine Mazilly Pere & Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

Bought quite a bit of this some time ago. Color dark ruby. Fine tobacco, vegetation, red berries and fine tannins. Everything just subtle and well composed with good acidity. Classic Gevrey Chambertin which should be enjoyable for many many more years.

2004 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans

Dark ruby red. Raspberry, dark cherry, light tobacco and orange peel. Fantastic tannin, which is still strong after 4 years and good structure. Chocolate and spices, strong alcohol. Very persistent and with time, increased in complexity and smoothness.

2001 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Au Velle

After En Champ and Cinq Terroir, again, another Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin. Smoky, leafy, with black cherry and some floral notes. Tannins still quite chewy and acidity still high. Compared to En Champ (same year), slightly less powerful, but with greater leafy smell. Compared to Cinq Terroir, much less powerful, but more finese in that you can slowly appreciate the terroir whereas the Cinq Terroir gives you so many flavours that might be at times overwhelming.

After 1 hour, the smell was diminished a bit, however the tannins and acidity blended nicely to create a wine that has its highly enjoyable with good structure.

2004 Domaine Bernard Morey et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot

The beautiful wine from Morey et Fils. Nose with peach, floral, nectar, toasty notes and fine vanilla. So much complexity and great finish of minerals, acidity and the sweat round fatty notes.

Have to say that Chez Patrick sure has a good selection of wine. The more important thing is to find the right sweet person to drink it with.

2002 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Bourgogne Cuvée Sylvie

Again, impressive wine and food match. The Sylvie Esmonin has red cherry bursting, with yeasty, cinnamon and little earth. Nice finish, very smooth and went fantastic with the Black Truffle angel hair! Well done Heline!

2005 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs

Can't believe we finished all 3 of this bottle within a month... sigh.... Vegetable overtones, complex, strong berries. Really enjoyable and a good example of what a modern Burgundy pinot can do.

2003 Château de La Tour Clos Vougeot

Thanks you Alex for the great Clos Vougeot Grand Cru. Cherries, berries, with strong vegetal and leathery tones. Fantastic finish with minty overtones. Fine texture and very smooth tannins. Long finish. After 1 hour, did not particularly improved but dropped off a bit. Still, a very good Clos Vougeot.

2005 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs

After tasting the En Champs wine of 1997 and 2005, was really looking forward to this wine. Today, finally had the chance to drink with Emilio and Amy. This wine is the year before Denis Mortet's suicide and is from the fiver terroirs, including En Champs, Combe-Dessus, En Seree, En Motrot and En Velle.

So silky, so smooth. The nose is filled with blackberries, vanilla, pine, chocolate. The wine is purplish, unlike the typical Burgundy. It is a crazy wine, with elegance from Burgundy but with the fruit and layers of a new world wine. Don't feel the tannins that much, soft leather, the earth and great great fruit. You can very much feel the mix of terroirs even though it states it is a blend of 5 terroirs. Interesting, fine and wonderful wine, will definately wait a couple more years to taste what is like! Buy it if you have the opportunity, a wonderful Burgundy wine.

2005 Domaine Arlaud Gevrey-Chambertin

Strong red fruit, jammy, soft tannins and spices. Medium to long finish, good structure. This is a father and son (Pere et Fils) vineyard and is a a combination of both old and new. Improved after 1 hour. Not particularly impressive, but good easy drink during the night.

2004 Michel Picard Puligny-Montrachet "Les Chalumaux"

Great stone fruit, peaches bursting from the nose. Good acidity, minerals and oaky. Creamy but not oily. It continues to produce great aroma even after opening for 1-2 hours. Served slightly chilled, but drank a bit too fast this time for the other flavors to come out. Still have 2 more to go, maybe should get an extra few before they are all gone.

1997 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin en Champs Vieilles Vignes

Bought this at the duty free in Macau ferry terminal as tried the same wine 01 last month. Strong raspberries, cherries, tobacco, espresso, wet leaves and reasonable tannin. The smell is of strong smell of leaves, and when the mouth it is like chewing fruits. Medium acidity and long finish. Excellent condition!

Next time would really like to try the Mes Cinq Terroir from the various terroirs of Gevrey Chambertin.

2004 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chaumes

Got this bottle at Cafe de Paris as the Faiveleys (most of the Burgundies offered) were too expensive.

Medium ruby color. Cherry, plums, rather masculine, high in acidity but elegant. A good treat for my first try of wines from Les Chaumes, Chassagne-Montrachet.

2001 Joseph Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Combes Aux Moines

Half bottle for this Faiveley. Cherry, red fruit, medium red within medium tannins and high in acidity.

2001 Domaine Denis Mortet- Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs Vieille Vigne

Dinner at 鴛鴦飯店 Yin Yang in Wanchai. Did not bring wine so went to a wine store nearby. It is always both with joy and a touch of sadness when one drinks a Denis Mortet as he took his life in 2006. As the owner of the wine shop said, "with each one sold, there is one less in the world". This was his last one from this terroir and En Champs is an easy to drink with blackberry and cherry fruit. Coffee, chocolate, reasonable tannin and excellent finish. Looking forward to trying more wine from Denis Mortet.

Dinner last week with parents at Chez Patrick in Sun Street, Wanchai. First time there and went through their web page going through their wine list before ordering. Was going to order the 1/2 bottle Ch Giscours 1999, but as they were out of stock, end up with this wine.

Delightful, fresh, flowers, well structured and great from start to finish. Went well with food, and right time to drink.
